Kylie Minogue Rosé 2020, Vin de France
Kylie and pink wine – what a perfect combination of lovely frivolity. And being frivolous is something we all badly need in our lives. So, grab a bottle of this apricot-tinted rosé and enjoy its flavours of lightest lychee, peach and just a hint of marshmallow at the finish. There is also a faint prickle on the palate, to make it very food friendly, especially with the type of dish, rich in olive oil, you might find in the south of France. Sample with a salad niçoise or all by itself to create a holiday mood on the darkest day. It would also work wonderfully with ratatouille or pissaladière, that delectable tart crammed with onion and anchovy which really evokes the Riviera.

As a Vin de France, this is not the most expensive in Kylie’s wine repertoire. She also has a top Provence rosé, Chateau Sainte Roseline, in her portfolio. This elegant example of the genre is sold in outlets such as Harvey Nichols. But don’t dismiss this more affordable cousin. The climate down in Roussillon is ideal for production of ripe red grapes, and this wine features Carignan (80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon. Once upon a time this lesser-known zone of France was the heartland for growing grapes destined for Vin de Table, the sort of wine served unceremoniously in carafe all over France. To some extent, this type of simple wine is still made here, but at the same time the affordability of vineyards located outside fashionable Provence means high quality can be achieved at a good selling price. And, of course, since the days of Vin de Table being sold for a couple of old francs the wine world has shifted, bringing technical expertise with it from countries like Australia.
Which brings us back to the quintessential Australian songstress herself. Kylie is not only an enduringly successful pop star at the vintage age of 53, she is also admired for her enthusiasm and support for France. In 2008, Kylie was awarded an OBE for services to music as well as receiving the highest cultural honour in France, Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, presented by the French Government for her contribution to the enrichment of French culture.
