Gerard Bertrand ‘Côte des Roses’ 2020

Gérard Bertrand’s Cote des Roses is a lushly presented flower of a wine, right down to the rose etched in the base of the bottle. Don’t be fooled by its fancy appearance though; this is a well-made, balanced blend of three classic southern grapes grown in the Languedoc. There’s a hint of the herbal on the palate and a faint finish of musk rose. It seems an odd wine to associate with a rugby player, but that is indeed the former profession of Gérard Bertrand, who runs the company. The French south west is a place where rugby is almost a religion, so he certainly started with an advantage in terms of publicity when he took over his father’s company. No help required these days, as this memorable wine is the most searched online from the entire Languedoc, and a multiple award winner in competition.

At 13.5%, it isn’t as delicate as some of its Provence rivals, and therefore it makes a fine wine to accompany rich food. Grenache based, with some Syrah & Cinsault, this wine has depth and succulence plus a good hint of that black pepper which characterises the Syrah grape. The Languedoc coast boasts marvellous seafood and this delicious rosé would pair perfectly with seiche (cuttlefish), often served simply grilled, or with langoustines. Its full and rounded palate would also work well with pork or duck dishes, which abound in the region. If you ever have time and energy to prepare the legendary local dish cassoulet I would venture to suggest this wine would complement it with panache.

Or simply enjoy as an apéritif on a sunlit terrace and admire the beauty of both bottle and glass.
