Champagne de Saint-Gall
Can a Champagne offer easy drinking – or is that disrespectful of the Art of Fine Fizz? Discuss. If such a thing exists this St Gall sparkler from the reliable Union Champagne is it. Not to say it is bland. It has charm and delicacy since it’s made without Pinot Meunier – most muscular of the Champagne grape varieties. Serve this chilled with a platter of strawberries dipped in chocolate- or trail it from a punt in a chilly English river before enjoying with a picnic. It’s a fun Champagne, undoubtedly. I award it 17.5 points.

About this Vineyard
Champagne de Saint-Gall is the prestige label of Union Champagne, a remarkable ‘cooperative of cooperatives’ founded, bringing together 2,300 growers farming over 1,400 hectares – 90% of which is Premier and Grand Cru, more than any other producer in Champagne. Based in the prestigious village of Avize in the Cote des Blancs, the cooperative controls fully 50% of all Grand Cru vineyards in this hallowed subregion. Their top cuvee, the 100% Chardonnay Orpale, is aged for a minimum of ten to fifteen years, delivering extraordinary complexity at a fraction of the price of the grand marques.
