Chateau La Clairiere Laithwaite – Chateau La Clairiere Laithwaite Rose

Still seeking fine rosé but meanwhile could not resist paying a visit to the immaculate cellars of Ch La Clairière Laithwaite on a glorious autumn day. Those talented Laithwaites have nurtured and improved these vineyards over many years ( I realised my last visit was about 20 years ago!) when not building their online wine empire. Their wines here demonstrate winemaking prowess and delicate attention to detail. As in nearby St-Emilion, Merlot is the predominant variety, and other classic local cépages make a balanced blend. Grapes from mature vines are handpicked and there is judicious use of amphorae and some new wood for aging (but not too much) – on the palate the 2018 demonstrated great balance, sufficient fruit and some subtle tannins. Perfect with game pie or a dish made with local cèpes. A wine to serve with Christmas lunch?

About this Vineyard

‘ Now made by head winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua, the wine is a rich, full-bodied blend of mainly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, aged for 16 months in French oak.
