Baron Philippe de Rothschild – Mouton Cadet Rose

OK- deep breath- today I am going to be controversial. While spending time in the Bordeaux region of France last week conversation turned to brands. Whatever happened to Mouton Cadet we asked one another? This brand has been a stalwart on shelves and in cellars since 1930 when it was created by the distinguished wine family of Rothschild. Quick dash to nearby hypermarché yielded a bottle of pink which was opened and tasted …. to say it was disappointing would be an understatement. Admittedly well priced, this Bordeaux rosé is simply bland. A great shame as this region is an exciting place for pink wine at the moment and a high profile brand could open doors and encourage the consumer to drift away from seductive Provence and its Whispering Angels… at least sometimes! Let me have your thoughts on this…

About this Vineyard

the visionary Baron Philippe de Rothschild created Mouton Cadet as a way to bottle wine from his legendary Chateau Mouton Rothschild that didn’t quite meet the chateau’s exacting standards – and in doing so, he launched what would become the world’s best-known Bordeaux brand. Now overseen by Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and his siblings, Mouton Cadet is produced at a state-of-the-art winery in Saint-Laurent-Medoc, blending Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc from over 250 partner winegrowers farming 1,500 hectares across Bordeaux. With 12 million bottles produced each year, it remains a remarkable ambassador for the region.
