Planeta – Planeta Rose
Produced from those two warrior red grapes, raunchy Nero d’Avola and spicy Syrah, this polished Sicilian pink from the house of Planeta expresses the island perfectly. A long history, masses of style and culture and a whiff of danger? Palest russet colour, definite ripe fruit, especially melon (?watermelon, anyone) on the nose but on the palate – an enticing hint of creaminess. I see the winery characterises this as meringue; and I wouldn’t disagree. Try this with swordfish or tuna- grilled.

About this Vineyard
The Planeta family has called the rolling hills of Menfi in western Sicily home for seventeen generations, ever since the ancient farmhouse came into the family as a wedding dowry. The modern winemaking revolution began in the 1990s when cousins Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, guided by patriarch Diego, planted new vineyards and launched what they call their ‘Viaggio in Sicilia’ – a journey that now spans seven wineries across five distinct territories from Sambuca di Sicilia to the slopes of Etna. With 395 hectares of mostly organic vineyards and a deep commitment to both indigenous and international varieties, Planeta has been instrumental in putting Sicilian wine firmly on the world stage.
