Purato – Organic Rose Terre Siciliane IGP 2023
Spring is – in the wings. In Trapani, western Sicily, temperatures are set to rise to a very palatable 22 degrees this coming week. And the Nero d’Avola vines that yield up Purato will be feeling the sap rise at last. This simple yet seductive rosé has marvellous eco-credentials. The company declares itself ‘Green – to the Extreme!’ But how does it taste? To my palate there is a whiff of the sea here, a mineral/salty tang that gives it great versatility. A friend declared’ ‘I could drink this all afternoon’ and with its 12.5% lightness of touch that could be a temptation. A delightful match for all antipasti such as marinaded vegetables, sardines or salty ham. Try it with fresh Italian bread dipped in quality olive oil. Simple and perfect. I award it 16.5 points.

About this Vineyard
Purato is the brainchild of Stefano Girelli, a third-generation winemaker and one of Italy’s leading advocates of sustainable viticulture, who founded TWP Wines with partner Peter Kosten to champion organic Sicilian winemaking. The name means ‘pure’ in Italian, and the wines live up to it: certified organic, 100% vegan, and carbon neutral, with bottles made from at least 80% recycled glass. Sourced from organic vineyards in Trapani on Sicily’s sun-drenched western coast, the range showcases the island’s finest varieties including Nero d’Avola and Grillo.
