La Calcinara – MUN Marche Rosato

A total revelation in pink wine last night at Walcot House in Bath. This bottle manages to combine the glamour and delicate colouring of Provence with the richness and complexity of organically produced Montepulciano from the Marche region of Italy. Peaches, then cranberries, then a seductive kick of something herbal to finish. Congratulations to the Berluti brother and sister team who created this and the sommelier who recommended it.

About this Vineyard

La Calcinara was established in 1997 by Mario Berluti in the calcareous, fossil-rich hills of Candia near Ancona in Italy’s Marche region, and is now run with infectious enthusiasm by his children Paolo and Eleonora. Their MUN Rosato — the name a poetic nod to the moon — is made from 100% Montepulciano grapes, gently pressed with no skin maceration and spontaneously fermented without selected yeasts. Named Decanter’s Must Try Rose and praised by Jancis Robinson for its depth, complexity, and distinctive salty minerality carried on the sea breeze from the nearby Adriatic, this is a rosato with real soul.
