Rosa Mati, Fattoria Le Pupille 2022

Fine Italian rosé is making its mark in the pink wine world and this one could lay claim to being among the very best. It is certainly the result of passionate research and effort by Elisabetta Geppetti, owner of Fattoria Le Pupille in the Maremma region of Tuscany. Hers is a fascinating story; she was instrumental in reviving an almost forgotten DOC – Morellino di Scansano – back in the 1980s. Today she works with her daughter Clara to perfect the small and sophisticated list of wines created here, not far from the Italian coast. The wines have a whiff of the sea about them, and a minerality that adds freshness and vigour. Red wines are her main calling card, but this rosé, created from Syrah grapes, has a very unusual style.

The wines have a whiff of the sea about them, and a minerality…

We are in Super Tuscan territory here, where Sangiovese grapes blend with classic French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah to create huge, fruit forward red wines with immense aging potential. This pink cannot aspire to such magnitude, but it has tremendous depth of flavour and is undoubtedly a gastronomic rosé, ideal to serve throughout a meal. The nose offers a hint of ripe peach along with the spiciness of cloves, an aroma of garden pinks which then resolves into a pepperiness typical of Syrah. On the finish there is great length, a degree of salty minerality and a lingering impression of warm musk rose.
Like everything connected to this winery, this is a classy glass and worth every penny.
