Champagne de Saint-Gall Le Rosé

Union Champagne is a collective source of fine and reliable fizz that has been creating excellent bottles for over 50 years. Many of the top Champagnes in our supermarkets and restaurants originate here and Champagne de Saint-Gall pink is a very honourable example. The great advantage of this co-operative approach is access to technical excellence, tremendous blending skill and an ability to acquire the best possible grapes. Champagne is a highly competitive market for grapes, which are of course the classics: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. This particular pink has a gentle, autumnal quality with a faint bitterness at the finish, reminiscent of cobnuts and quince.

Based in Avize, the heart of Blanc de Blancs Champagne, this pink is a masterly blend with over 25% red varietals in the mix, which lends the wine a more structured quality and makes it a fizz that could be served throughout a meal. Given the autumnal style, with a faint hint of woodsmoke on the nose, try it with game such as partridge, venison or pheasant casserole. The base wine here is the 2018 vintage and there is a definite hint of apple on the nose, which is refreshing and somewhat unusual. The finish comes through creamy and ripe, with an attractive warmth on the palate. As is usual for pink Champagne, this has around 15% of red wine in the mix, from the appropriately named village of Bouzy (next to its sister village, Dizy as it happens). Champagne is a rare example of red and white mixing, and it is entirely legitimate. To summarise, this is a pink Champagne with a great deal of character, which shows at its best with food, not just a fun fizz to share with friends.
